Navarre High grad turns himself in as a suspect in Centennial Bank robbery

The alleged perpetrator of a bank robbery five months ago at Navarre’s Centennial Bank, Joel Anthony Beauchemin, 22, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25 when he turned himself in at the Santa Rosa County Jail. Beauchemin graduated from Navarre High School in 2011 and was a member of the track and field team, football and baseball teams.

After the morning bank robbery, on April 17, 2014 the alleged robber fled the building with an undisclosed amount of money, and until Sept. 25, had remained at large. According to the report, the suspect gave a note to the teller that said, “Give me all the hundreds – at least $1,000 and no one gets hurt.” The teller did not have hundreds and told the suspect that. The teller laid all the $50 bills on the counter, totaling around $150 and he stated, “More.” She then handed him some $20 bills and then he took the money and ran out the door.

Investigators and K-9 units from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s office then circulated the area subsequent to the robbery and located key pieces of evidence to including clothing worn by the robber. DNA samples were then taken from the clothing and gloves that were discarded.

According to police reports, on July 13, 2015, the Sheriff’s Office received an FDLE laboratory report stating a match occurred between the DNA profile and a qualifying arrestee sample. The suspect was subsequently identified as Joel Anthony Beauchemin, of Navarre.

The match was obtained from latex gloves found in a vacant lot on the south side of Esplanade Street by the wood line at the northwest side of the lot where the canines had established a track.

Navarre Press covered the bank robbery in its April 23, 2015 issue.

This is not the first encounter Beauchemin has had with law enforcement.  According to an FDLE background check, in 2012, the Tallahassee Police Department arrested and charged him with felony possession of cocaine with intent to sell manufacture or deliver; felony possession with intent to sell schedule III drugs; felony possession of marijuana with intent to sell, manufacture or distribute.  In 2013, Beauchemin was arrested and charged with similar felony drug possession charges.  Beauchemin
