Navarre Beach Fire Department Chief Mike Howard has resigned his position with the department. In a letter to the department’s board of commissioners tendered Monday, Dec. 4, Howard resigned requesting two months of severance pay and three months of health insurance.
The fire commissioners discussed the task of replacing Howard at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, Dec. 12. They voted to advertise the position internally first. The fire chiefs of the neighboring districts have agreed to assist with the interview process. In the interim, commissioner Kevin Rudzki will serve in Howard’s position. The reasons behind his departure are unclear and were not stated in the letter of resignation.
Howard was hired as the department’s chief in 2006 after long-time chief Jim Wirth retired. Howard had served as Battalion Chief for the department before being promoted to Chief.
