More details on shooting emerge

Shots rang out Friday evening Oct. 30 on Valley Road in Holley by the Sea and when it was over, one person was shot and in critical condition and another is in custody for attempted murder and aggravated assault.

According to the arrest report, Santa Rosa’s Emergency Communication center received a 911 call from a person stating they had shot someone and then that person hung up. It was determined to have originated from a residence in the 2200 block of Valley Road in Holley by the Sea. When two deputies arrived around 8:45 p.m., they found John Marshall Fitzgerald on the front porch kneeling over the victim, Nelson “Rivers” Starkey, 22.  Fitzgerald reportedly had blood on his clothing. A handgun was found just inside the front door.

Starkey appeared to have been shot multiple times including once to the head. Due to the large amount of blood the deputies could not determine the exact location of Starkey’s wounds. Fitzgerald was detained, taken into custody and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail where he was booked at 1:10 a.m.

A witness who was present prior to the shooting reported that Starkey and Fitzgerald got into a verbal altercation.  The witness ran out the front door and as he was running he heard gunshots.

Starkey was transported less than a mile to the Holley-Navarre Fire Station 41 on Manatee Street in Holley by the Sea where Lifeguard Air Ambulance landed to transport him.

Starkey was taken to an area hospital and remains in critical condition. There was only one individual injured during the course of this incident.

Nelson Rivers Starkey is a University of Alabama Student, and graduated from Florence High School in Florence, Alabama. His grandfather, Representative Nelson Starkey, was one of the longest serving state legislators, serving 26 years in the Alabama State legislature before succumbing to cancer at the age of 76 in 2005.
