Man charged after mother’s decomposed body found

A Pace man was charged June 25 for not reporting his mother’s death after her badly decomposed body was found on a couch in the home they shared when cops performed a welfare check May 13.

Michael Eugene Sticken, 60, of the 3900 block of Thornton Street, was arrested June 25 on a first-degree misdemeanor charge of failure to report a death to the medical examiner. He was also charged with a third-degree felony for larceny – grand theft.

Sticken told cops his mother, Joyce Willis, 81, was his “best friend,” and he adamantly denied playing any role in her death. Family members said he had been denying others access to Willis since January.

Medical Examiner Dr. Andy Minyard performed an autopsy and said Willis had died one to four months earlier. The cause of death is pending further testing.

Investigators discovered Willis’ Social Security checks had been the sole deposits into a bank account she shared with Sticken, who had been making withdrawals from the account.
