Lionfish spotted at Navarre Beach Reef

Recently a predatory lionfish, a destructive invasive species with venomous spines, was spotted in the Gulf of Mexico at the Navarre Beach reef. Plans are underway for the county to permit spearfishing at Navarre Beach Marine Park in an effort to eradicate the fish.

County Engineer Roger Blaylock apprised county commissioners of the situation at Monday’s committee meeting. “We have to take some action before they get out of hand,” said Mike Sandler, representing the Marine Sanctuary, which developed the park’s artificial reefs.
