Legal undertow engulfs shoreline neighborhood

Yard signs urging “Stop City of Gulf Breeze Land Grab” are popping up along quiet streets in this affluent community where such public proclamations are usually in support of police, the Blue Angels or Republican candidates.

But now a shady 30-foot-wide path leading from near the dead end of Eufaula Street to a bluff overlooking Santa Rosa Sound is awash in opposing attorneys, snarky Facebook comments and competing petitions to City Hall.

“The city says this strip of land is a public park. They’ve spent a fortune trying to prove that. But the court says it’s private property,” said John Reese, a retired dentist who owns a house on one side of the disputed strip.
