Updated: Labor Day drowning on Navarre Beach

A male in his 60’s visiting Navarre Beach for Labor Day drowned in the Gulf of Mexico this afternoon near Navarre Towers. According to Navarre Beach Fire Chief Mike Howard, the initial call came in as a swimmer in distress on a raft. However, a raft was not found. When the Navarre Beach Fire Department responded, Navarre Beach Lifeguards were assisting and Holley-Navarre Fire responded to assist. A jet ski and rescue board were used to bring the victim to the shore where it was determined he was in cardiac arrest. CPR was administered and was still being administered when the Lifeguard Ambulance Helicopter landed near Beach Access 6 to take the victim to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. He was later pronounced dead. Surf conditions were at red flag.

Navarre Towers is almost a mile west of the Navarre Beach Pier.

The victim was later identified as Roderick M. Maybee, age 65, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
