Harmless “June grass” invades shoreline

Yuck! Navarre Beach has been invaded by a slimy green annual visitor some guests describe as “gross.” June grass, a harmless algae, is covering the Gulf of Mexico shoreline.

Although some visitors are hesitant to venture into the Gulf because of the soupy green mixture along the water’s edge, others are wading through the clumpy mix or finding clear access points along the shoreline.

Chris Verlinde, Florida Sea Grant extension agent with the Santa Rosa County Extension Office, says it’s June grass, a harmless algae which washes ashore each year about this time and sometimes clears up by July.
