Billows of smoke rose over rooftops in the Midway area Aug. 8 as flames spread throughout acres of wooded area east of River Birch Road and Clay Circle. The smoke was visible across Navarre.
Joe Zwierzchowski, a wildfire mitigation specialist for the Florida Forest Service, said a forest fire in the area affected roughly 44 acres of woods near a power easement south of East Bay Boulevard. Early reports had estimated that only 5 acres were affected, but final GPS tracking gave a better picture of the impact.
