The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners agreed at Monday’s budget workshop to approve scheduling a public hearing for a possible gas tax increase.
The county is facing a $2.8 million shortage for its upcoming budget and is projecting major road resurfacing projects will cost about $9.8 million over the next five years.
The gas tax is currently at 6 cents per gallon but it can be increased to a maximum of 12 cents. The gas tax in Santa Rosa County is far less than what it is in Escambia (11 cents) and Okaloosa (12 cents). The gas tax is just 7 cents in Walton County.
