Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Don Salter on Monday said he was ready to raise local gas taxes to fund road improvements. But none of his fellow commissioners supported such an increase now.

District 5 Commissioner Lane Lynchard pushed for county staff to develop a list of specific projects which would be funded by such a tax increase  and questioned why so many of the projects outlined by staff in a presentation during the board’s April 6 committee meeting were allocated for north end projects.  “I think we need to come up with a more equitable way to distributes funds,” Lynchard said.

District 1 Commissioner Jayer Williamson urged the board to wait to see if state legislators will change criteria which would allow the county to again qualify for certain state funding for road work. Williamson also cautioned the board against raising the local gas tax ahead of next year’s plans to ask voters to support a multi-year local option sales tax to fund construction of a new county courthouse.
