The Santa Rosa County Commissioners have approved a 5-cent increase in the local gas tax on Thursday morning by a vote of 4-1.
Commissioner Jayer Williamson voted against the increase, saying 3 cents would be enough.
The new ordinance is expected to raise revenue by about $2.8 million a year, and most of that money would be used for road improvements.
The Santa Rosa County Commission also approved a separate one cent tax on gas in addition to the 5-cent local option sales tax to come from fuel sales. The extra one cent, while in a different tax category, would also be used mainly for road improvements.
