A Navarre murder suspect in custody hung himself in his cell Friday morning according to the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.

Robert Shane Lucas

Sheriff Bob Johnson confirmed to Navarre Press that Robert Shane Lucas, 51, took his own life at approximately 5 a.m. Friday.

According to Johnson, Lucas was not on suicide watch at the time of the incident and there had been no indication that Lucas was at risk.

Jail staff had conducted a check on Lucas at 5 a.m. When they returned to his cell at 5:15 a.m. to deliver a meal, Lucas was found dead by hanging.

CPR was attempted but not successful. He was alone in his cell.

Lucas was arrested Feb. 6 for allegedly beating his mother-in-law, Carrie Brewer, to death in her home. At the time of the murder, deputies discovered a backpack containing notes allegedly written by Lucas threatening the lives of other family members, including his then-wife.

A man hunt was launched, ending in a high speed chase through a Gulf Breeze neighborhood. After a struggle, he was transported to Santa Rosa County Jail where he remained in custody.

He was charged with felony fleeing/eluding police, felony battery on a law enforcement officer, felony aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, felony vehicle theft, felony resisting an officer with violence and felony premeditated murder.

An autopsy will be performed on Lucas’s body to confirm cause of death.

The next court date in Lucas’s case was scheduled for Aug. 27.
