Dan Brown, superintendent of Gulf Islands National Seashore said J. Earle Bowden Way (State Road/Highway 399) will likely re-open later this afternoon.
“We have been out to inspect the road and the driving lanes are intact. There is sand covering the road surface so that needs to be swept clean,” said Brown. “There are several sections where the shoulder of the road and bicycle lane has collapsed. We will need to put barricades up. All of it should be accomplished by this afternoon. The work is in progress as we speak.”
The road was closed on Oct. 26 due to winds and high surf as the weakened remnants of Patricia made their way across the Florida panhandle. The storm flooded portions of the beach road making it impassable.
Navarre Press will update this story when the road officially re-opens.
