Another record tourism season on horizon

County bed tax collections continue to skyrocket after recovering from catastrophic losses following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Bed tax collections have progressively increased from roughly $79,000 in April 2011 to about $167,000 in April 2015.

The latest figures from April show income generated by overnight visitors to the county are up about 54 percent over that same period last year — although that amount also includes revenues from an additional one cent in bed taxes county commissioners began to levy in June 2014, earmarking for beach renourishment.

During April Navarre Beach raked in almost half of Santa Rosa County’s bed tax revenues, and to help bolster that income Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council members June 17 recommended funding $10,000 for the Navarre Beach Fishing Rodeo and $4,000 for the Panhandle Butterfly House’s annual Monarch Festival. Both events will be held in October 2015.
