The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) staff are mourning the loss of their resident sea turtle Gigi. She was humanely euthanized due to chronic medical conditions Monday.
Gigi was a completely blind loggerhead sea turtle. She was welcomed to the NBSTCC last August after living in captivity for 19 years. She was initially rescued after stranding on St. Augustine Beach.
Due to her blindness, Gigi was unable to be released back into the wild.
In recent months animal care staff at the NBSTCC observed that Gigi had been losing weight and not eating normally.
CT scans performed at Gulf Breeze Hospital last week confirmed multiple chronic illnesses that were untreatable. Gigi’s veterinarian as well as her permit holder Morgan McCallen consulted with Meghan Koperski of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for recommended actions.
Under FWC approval, Gigi was humanely euthanized Monday evening surrounded by those who had cared for her.
In the press release, Christy Meyer of NBSTCC wrote:
“We will not let Gigi down and begin the search for a sea turtle to continue her good work when ready as suggested by Meghan from Florida Fish and Wildlife.”
The center has closed for today and tomorrow.
