UPDATED: Fire caused by people grilling

Naval Live Oaks following Saturday’s wildfire.

The 16.5-acre wildfire at Naval Live Oaks Saturday was caused by people grilling along the beach, according to Florida Forest Service personnel and the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement.

Personnel found a grill, charred hamburger buns and other evidence in the area of the fire’s origin, according to a press release. The grill will be sent for fingerprinting.

Florida Forest Service, the U.S. Park Service and Gulf Coastal Plains Ecosystem Partnership personnel are monitoring the fire. Smoke has diminished since the weekend, but according to a press release from the forest service, there still are some hot spots and smoldering stumps and debris.

The Florida Forest Service and local departments were on scene Saturday. Three tractor-plow units worked to contain the fire, according to a press release.

Forest service crews returned Sunday morning to improve lines and monitor the perimeter.

The fire is contained but crews will monitor the site for the next several days.

We’ll have more details as they become available.
