Gutierrez turns dream of playing college softball into reality

Allison Gutierrez has spent a lot of time the last couple of years getting her name on the radar of college coaches, hitting the send button on countless emails and attending camps whenever possible.

Her trip to William Carey in December 2016 helped set the stage for the next step in her softball career. The standout Navarre pitcher liked everything about the NAIA school in Mississippi, both academically and athletically, and has attended a camp there twice a year since that point.

On Wednesday afternoon, in front of family, friends and teammates, Gutierrez signed her name on a national letter of intent to continue her career with the Crusaders.

“It’s been a dream forever to play in college,” Gutierrez said. “For it to be verbal is one thing. For it to be real, it’s crazy. My heart is racing.”

Gutierrez is joining a William Carey team that went 37-16 last year and reached the NAIA College World Series. Her head coach, Kelly Hayes, isn’t surprised her star pitcher will play at the next level.
