After welcoming a family of orangutans in January 2019, Gulf Breeze Zoo has received special recognition for their efforts to protect these animals in the wild through the “Spirit of Sumatra” conservation program. The Zoological Association of America awarded the 2019 In Situ Conservation Award to the zoo, which partnered with the Sumatran Orangutan Society to purchase and maintain 890-acres of palm oil plantations to create habitat for wild orangutans and other endangered species.
