Three, sharp rifle reports broke the morning calm causing a solitary hawk to take wing over Santa Rosa Sound then loop back to a copse of trees as the melancholy notes of “Taps” rose from a lone bugler. A small group watched from a distance, some with hands over their hearts. A curious neighbor watching the proceedings from over the fence raised his arm into a salute.
