Girls soccer team takes aim at another successful season

With a nucleus of players who took Navarre to the regional tournament last year, Navarre’s girls soccer team returned to the practice field Oct. 21.

Seventy-eight athletes tried out, and three days later, head coach Robert Simon published a list of 19 players for the varsity squad. It features eight seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.

Last year, the varsity Raiders made it to the regional after a double-overtime loss to Niceville. Their postseason run ended with a 2-1 loss to Leon.

Of those returning Raiders, Simon is counting on five seniors – defender Marissa Kelley, forward Hailey Bastian, defender Bailey Marshall, midfielder/forward Autumn Slaybaugh and defender Jade Slaybaugh – for their leadership.

“I think that (the season) depends on us,” Jade Slaybaugh said. “I think we have the potential to do really good this year. But that’s only if we come out here every day, and we put our best foot forward.”

With a few seasons as a unit, the girls are familiar with each other and the program.
