BAT BRAWL: OFFICE OWNERS SUE TO KEEP STATE WORKERS IN PLACE
Last month, inspectors discovered pounds of bat feces in the area right above the ceiling of Ken Lawson’s office. Lawson is secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. State legislators this spring ordered a halt to lease payments to Northwood Associates, the owners of a former mall that is home to several different state agencies.
2 PANTHERS KILLED IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that a 4-year-old male’s body was found Sunday on Interstate 75 near Bonita Beach Road in Lee County, and then a 5-month-old male was found the same day on Golden Gate Boulevard in Collier County. The remains will be taken to a Gainesville facility for a necropsy.
FLORIDA SHERIFF ASKS JUDGE TO DISMISS $23 MILLION VERDICT
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office attorneys argued Monday that Dontrell Stephens’ attorneys linked his 2013 shooting to those of other black men around the country rather than let the jury decide the case on its own merits. Attorney Summer Barranco told Magistrate Judge Barry Seltzer that race played a “subtle” role in the decision.
SURVIVOR CLINGS TO CAPSIZED BOAT OVERNIGHT; 3 OTHERS DIE
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder says 45-year-old Robert Stewart was taken to a hospital Monday after he was found walking on a beach. He is listed in critical condition, but sheriff’s office video shows him walking off a rescue helicopter. The bodies of two adults and a child were recovered Monday.
