Five Mile Swamp Fire claims 14 homes near Garcon Point

Despite meeting increased permitting requirements, a prescribed burn got out of control last week near the intersection of Avalon Boulevard and I-10, sparking a wildfire that burned more than 2,000 acres, displaced hundreds of people at a time and destroyed 14 homes.

Officials said the fire, dubbed the Five Mile Swamp Fire, escaped control May 4, and by May 5 roughly 250 acres were impacted. Within 24 hours, it had grown to 10 times that size, moving its way across the Garcon Point peninsula.
