First responders climb stairs to commemorate those killed on 9/11

As the summer heat index rose Sept. 11, firefighters in full gear tromped their way up and down the towers of Summerwinds condominiums on Navarre Beach. Sweat rolled down their noses and necks in the non-air-conditioned stair wells.

Unlike their usual training, this stair climb held special symbolism as first responders from all fields joined the effort. Each climber wore a purple name tag baring a name, photo and the words “Never Forget.” Each tag represented one of the 412 first responders killed in terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001.

Navarre Beach Fire Rescue hosted the stair climb remembrance.
