With the door left open a spring sports season could be revived in early May, coaches and athletes believe picking up where things left off is possible.
The fate of the season, of course, hinges on the path the COVID-19 pandemic takes leading up to May 4. That’s the date the Florida High School Athletic Association has set for athletic-related activities resuming if schools reopen.
Senior softball standout Allison Gutierrez is holding onto hope that it will happen.
“I know the athletes are all eager and willing to do whatever it takes. I know for us softball girls, we just really want to play amongst each other again,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez played her last game with teammates March 12. She had no idea at the time the season would remain in a holding pattern for what has nearly been a month now.
All schools are closed until at least May 1. Because of the closure, athletics or any other school-related activities are not allowed.
