Food safety on farms and at processing plants is a concern during the COVID-19 pandemic, but The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is doing its part to ease any fears the public might have on the topic.
Mark Ritenour, a UF/IFAS professor of post-harvest physiology and handling, discussed the measures in place to keep farms safe. He noted that all but a few of the smallest fresh produce farms in the state are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration Produce Safety Rule. The rule features requirements for human health and hygiene and the cleaning and sanitation of equipment that comes in contact with food.
