Energized effort propels Raiders to win in spring game

Gabe Davis shot out of the backfield with a full head of steam, the defense with no chance to slow him down. In the blink of an eye, the rising senior was in the end zone, extending Navarre’s lead over Milton to double digits in the spring game Friday night at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

His touchdown, which easily covered more than 20 yards, was the only one of the night for the varsity team in its half of the game on a warm spring evening in front of an electric crowd. Davis scored it with 11:09 to play to put the exclamation point on a 10-0 win over the Panthers.

Davis spent last season in the defensive backfield for the Raiders, but that score showed that he’s poised to be a valuable threat out of the offensive backfield as well this fall.

“It’s different, coming from the defensive side, but it felt good. I’ll contribute any way I can,” Davis said.

But make no mistake, Davis is still a valuable part of the secondary, picking off a pass in the opening quarter that killed off hopes of an early score for the Panthers.

The defense as a whole made more than its fair share of big plays, nearly coming through with a few more interceptions while making a host of big hits.
