Reports to: Publisher

Overall Responsibility: Navarre Press is an award-winning publication, garnering the top award, Newspaper of
the Year, four times in the most recent five years. The editor will strive to take Navarre Press from a position
of excellence to the next level. The editor will manage the newsroom often without assistance and provide the
news department with the tools, training and leadership needed to increase readership and circulation for each
of our publications. As the leader of the newsroom, the editor must possess a strong news judgment, a natural
curiosity, strong ethics, management skills and communicate regularly with the publisher in a timely manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead weekly story meetings with the newsroom staff. Together with the reporters, establish the story budget for
the next issue and make story assignments.
• Plan enterprise stories two to three weeks in advance.
• Take on a beat as needed.
• Write three to four bylined stories per week.
• Work with production manager on graphics, photos and artwork to enhance story layout.
• Review all article submissions for content, correct spelling and proper AP style application prior to sending
to copy editor.
• Create and enforce deadlines. Ideally, all stories would be complete and submitted by close of business Friday with
the exception of breaking news or new stories that happen after Friday.
• Lead the day-to-day operation of the newsroom and its publications and establish the pace.
• Make improvements as needed to the current processes in place to take the newspaper through the
print cycle (i.e. writing, coverage plans, production schedule, etc.)
• Improve the publication’s digital footprint by planning and executing podcasts and webcasts. Encourage and
implement use of video coverage on social media whenever possible.
• Ensure the writers are posting to the website in a timely manner and sharing to social media.
Navarre Press is daily online (tease) and weekly in print.
• Create new and innovative ways to encourage reader interaction and grow readership through the editorial department.
• Take calls from readers regarding story ideas and comments regarding stories.
• Conduct thorough evaluation of employees’ writing skills and work individually with each to improve their performance.
Be a good coach and/or mentor to the writers and effectively manage their workload.
• Manage page proofs to ensure the aesthetic and technical quality of the publication.
Makes all corrections to pages on production day.
• Stay abreast of industry trends and news by reading material and attending seminars and conferences.
• Monitor vital metrics and adjust as needed. Plan for ways to capture the various segments of our market
providing content of interest.
• Get involved in the community, develop relationships with other leaders in the community and be a personality
of the publication.
• Be prepared to speak publicly when requested giving presentations to groups and organizations in the area.
Develop a presentation that you can give on short or limited notice.
• Manage all public record requests.
• Other duties as assigned.

Successful editor will:

• Have a working knowledge of InDesign and be very familiar with AP Style.
• Possess strong time management skills.
• Have excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
• Have a working knowledge of news management, exceptional news judgment, passion, vision and familiarity with
both print and online publishing.
• Comfortable with a high degree of community involvement and direct reader engagement.
• Be a team player who works collegially and earns respect at all levels of the organization.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by this position to successfully perform
the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, this position is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to
stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. This position must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required
by this job include the ability to adjust focus. Manual dexterity required for frequent typing and data entry.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Professional office environment, some overnight travel may be required.
