Jennifer Wells is a long way from home in a world decidedly different from her native Navarre.
The Navarre High School graduate teaches fourth-graders at an inner-city Cleveland school as part of the Teach For America program, which is designed to expand educational opportunities for students in low-income communities.
Wells isn’t in an ordinary classroom where the students are eager and excited to learn.
She teaches children who lack real stability in their lives, children who worry about where their next meal is going to come from – 99 percent of the students are on the free lunch program – and struggle with even the simplest tasks of paying attention and behaving properly in a classroom.
