Jackie Pratscher hasn’t had her name on a billboard since she won a speech contest in fifth grade. Today, more than 15 years later, her name is displayed on the board outside of Holley-Navarre Intermediate School honoring her as the school’s Teacher of the Year.
When the principal called her name, Pratscher said she “ugly cried” as she made her way to the front of the room.
“I’m a crier, but I really ugly cried,” the fifth-grade teacher said. “I couldn’t even talk. I wanted to say something, but I was overwhelmed.
“It’s the most special gift,” she said. “I do it for the kids, not anyone else, and when your peers recognize you, I’m stunned and shocked and still haven’t found the way to explain it.”
