Judge dismisses former principal’s lawsuit

U.S. District Judge Richard Smoak May 27 dismissed a lawsuit filed last year by former East Milton Elementary Principal Jerilyn Hughes against Santa Rosa County School Board.

Hughes filed a federal gender discrimination lawsuit May 7, 2014 with the Florida Northern District Court after being demoted, following a December 2012 incident at an outdoor concert held in Santa Rosa County.

Smoak’s order states the school board said  it demoted Hughes “due to her drunken and embarrassing behavior at a public concert – behavior which violated board policies and impacted her ability to lead a school.” The order goes on to state Hughes said the board “would not have so punished a male who engaged in similar behavior.”

“After review, I find that Hughes has not produced any evidence whatsoever to support her claim,” Smoak said.
