Sandra Drost couldn’t help but look around the West Navarre Intermediate cafeteria and smile at the sight of so many fathers spending quality time with their children in a school setting.
“This warms my heart,” said Drost, the academic intervention specialist at the school.
Heartwarming fits as an appropriate description. Successful is appropriate as well as more than 300 dads, and in some cases, uncles and grandfathers, attended the first Take Your Dad to School Day.
“The response is overwhelming, but it’s a good overwhelming,” third-grade teacher Ann Thompson said. “When we first started thinking about this, we didn’t think the response would be so big. It’s awesome to see.”
Drost and Thompson played a big part in planning the event, jokingly saying they were the masterminds behind it. They only expected between 60 and 100 dads to show up. Their expectations were exceeded by leaps and bounds, with at least 350 turning out.
