The gymnasium thundered with the stomping of feet and screaming of spectators. Giant signs emblazoned with glittery flames waved high above the heads of hundreds who sat in the stands or crouched behind ropes on the gym floor.
The announcer called the final minute as sweat beaded on one driver’s forehead. He deftly maneuvered the controls of his team’s blue and yellow painted robot. Slowly the arm dragged a victim from the “burning” building to safety seconds before the buzzer blared.
