After a Navarre High School student was arrested April 17 for taking a loading gun to school and parents were notified about five hours after the arrest was made, Navarre Press asked school board district 3 candidates to give us their opinion on how parents should be notified and when.
Candidates were asked to submit their answers using fewer than 100 words. A portion of each candidate’s response is shown below.
- “It is imperative that any information shared with parents be accurate and a proportional response to the situation…” — Carol Boston.
- “Parents need immediate notification of an emergency situation in their children’s school by any means possible…” — Debbie Gunnoe.
- “Not being privy to the facts of how or why, my management experience leads me to think the school principal acted out of collaboration with the police…” — Fuchsia Ann Spann
- “I feel it is appropriate for the Principal and Deputies to be certain that all measures have been taken to insure that the school building has once again become a safe environment…” — Jim Taylor
