Foster parents often face a litany of challenges when they take in a new child or sibling group. They have to establish trust with children who have often faced abuse or neglect while also providing for their needs.
Local mother of 6 Dawn previously fostered three children before adopting them, and she said she understands that challenge first hand. (She has asked to not have her last name listed for the protection of her adoptive children.) When she began fostering, her other children were older, but her foster group had two children in diapers.
“It had been a long time since I did diapers, and I had forgotten how expensive they are,” she said.
Dawn said meeting the costs of child care can be tough even with foster stipends through the state, and in many cases a family may not receive that stipend for several weeks.
But the babies will need diapers now.
In the interest of helping these foster parents meet their children’s needs, Dawn is working with fellow area foster and adoptive parents to hold the Cover the Bums Diaper Drive in Gulf Breeze and Navarre.
The drive is seeking collections of diapers in sizes 3, 4 and 5 as well as baby wipes. All diaper sizes are appreciated.
