Department of Defense orders military travel ban

A memorandum sent by the deputy secretary of defense March 13 orders all military members and civilian personnel and their families assiged to DoD installations, facilities and surrounding areas in the United States to stop travel while the order is in place beginning March 16.

The order is in response to COVID-19, the memo says, “to preserve force readiness, limit the continuing  spread of the virus and preserve the health and wefare of service members, DoD civilian employees, their families and the local communities.”

The order will affect TDYs, permanent changes of station (PCS) and temporary duty. Also, the memo states until the restrictions are lifted, bases may only onboard civilian employees within the local area. Military members are only authorized leave time in the local area. 

Military members who are currently TDY will be authorized to return to their local area. 

The travel restrictions are in place until May 11, 2020.
