Cross-country teams open season at Niceville Relays

Navarre’s cross-country teams finished their first meet of the new season Saturday at the Niceville Relays.

The varsity squads fielded eight two-person teams – three for the girls and five for the boys – in a relay-style event at Northwest Florida State College.

“It is ridiculously hot,” coach Katie Fein said. “I am very proud of these athletes. They have put in a lot of hard work this week. They may not have ran as fast as they wanted to, but this is a great race to get out all of their butterflies and prepare for the next invitational.”

Covering unlevel terrain as diverse as sand, gravel, and grass, the Raiders’ relays lined up in a field that featured Panhandle powerhouses Niceville and Fort Walton Beach. Essentially, the tandems covered six miles – three apiece – in 1.5-mile legs.

Talley Yamaguchi and Emma Kirby combined for a time of 51 minutes and 8 seconds, for 11th place overall. Nia Quarker and Saylor Marlow crossed the finish in 56:56 in 23rd place. Devyn Craner and Bella Martin clocked a 58:33 (27th).

“I realized there was more incline the second time around, and the sand, ugh,” Craner said.

Of the six schools competing, Navarre finished fourth in the girls’ competition. The boys placed fourth as well.
