Conley departs, Schermerhorn takes 1st SOW command

The Air Force’s most-deployed wing has a new commander. Col. Jocelyn J. Schermerhorn took charge June 8 in a ceremony at Hurlburt Field, making her the first female commander of the 1st Special Operations Wing.

She takes the reigns from Brig. Gen. Michael E. Conley, who became 1st SOW commander in 2018. During his time, Conley steered the wing through a pandemic as well as responding to the needs of Tyndall Air Force Base following the destructive power of Hurricane Michael.

Conley will continue to lead as the Vice Commander of the Space Operations Command at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

Presiding officer Lt. Gen. James C. Slife led the change of command ceremony in a hangar of Hurlburt and praised Conley’s leadership through unique times.
