Hands on her knees, fighting to catch her breath, Lily Campbell was exhausted after Thursday afternoon’s meet against Gulf Breeze and Milton.
For the first time in her life, the sophomore ran a meet in the Florida heat and humidity. That presents its own set of challenges, especially for a runner from North Dakota.
Despite the difference in running conditions, Campbell persevered on the 3.1 mile course set up around Dolphin Stadium, placing second overall among the girls in a time of 22 minutes and 42 seconds, barely behind winner Kristina Hankinson from Gulf Breeze, who posted a time of 22:28.
Luke Morris and Branden Heinke both earned top-10 finishes for the boys. Morris placed third in a time of 19:25. Heinke clocked in at 20:12.
