When Bruce Baron bought Patio Freedom in Pensacola nearly a decade ago, he wanted to make sure he carried on the same philosophy as the previous owner.
He’s accomplished that with a business that offers high quality patio furniture at discount prices.
“The way we do that is we keep our overhead low,” Baron said. “We don’t have employees, we don’t have delivery trucks and we don’t have a fancy air-conditioned showroom. But by keeping that overhead low, we can take a high quality set of patio furniture and sell it less than anyone else in Pensacola.”
Patio Freedom opened its doors in 1981 and the building has been purple since 1985, making the building hard to miss along a busy Navy Boulevard.
Baron was working in sales for the Pensacola News Journal when he purchased Patio Freedom.
“I knew the owner was selling the business and I told him I wanted to buy it. He said he wanted to sell it to me,” Baron said. “We worked out an incredible deal.”
Patio Freedom carries furniture from several manufacturers, including Winston Furniture, Seaside Casual, PVC Furniture, Northscape International and Home Crest.
The quality of the furniture is hard to beat. So is the customer service.
“Being a small business, it’s imperative that customer service is No. 1,” Baron said. “Our manufacturers back us 100 percent.”
Baron said big box stores are his biggest competition but the quality of patio furniture he sells is second to none.
“The big box stores buy in bulk and I call that furniture show and go furniture,” Baron said. “It looks good in the showroom, but when you take it home and put it in the elements, it doesn’t last.”
Baron offers his customers free repair on any products bought in his store and he even does repairs on residential and commercial patio furniture not purchased in his store, including replacing fabric or straps.
He’s done repairs for patio furniture for Pensacola Christian College and for condos on the beach.
“A lot of people don’t realize that you can repair patio furniture rather than have to replace it,” Baron said.
Open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. – the store will be closed the Saturday of Easter weekend – Baron said customers can walk around with any pressure.
“We’re not pushing people to buy. Our products sell themselves,” Baron said. “We just answer questions for people.”
The store is closed in January as that is typically its slowest month. Business is going well and Saturdays are typically the busiest days of the week.
Baron said he just sold patio furniture to a couple from Navarre. The best part of the deal was that he even delivered the set.
“They were tired of buying junk and wanted to buy a nice patio set,” Baron said. “They found a great set and I even drove it out to Navarre and delivered it for free.”
It’s another example of how Patio Freedom makes customer service a priority and is worth making the drive to check out its selection of high quality patio furniture.
