Jonathan Cook started his own construction company in 2005. It did so well that he opened his own flooring business a little over a year and a half ago.
The decision to open that business just made sense.
“I started out of my house, working mostly for realtor companies and flipping houses, and it worked well, and business kept growing,” Cook said. “I got to the point where I was spending so much on flooring that I might as well start a business and sell it to myself and make a profit.
Located at 6800 N. Palafox in Pensacola, Jonathan’s Flooring is a one-stop shop.
In addition to being able to meet your flooring needs, offering everything from vinyl plank to hardwood flooring, he also offers basic home repairs and will even have a crew clean up after a project is complete.
“I don’t know of any other store that will do that. They get so caught up in profit,” Cook said. “I look at as I’ll take a 3-4 percent loss on my profit to take care of the cleaning part of it.”
Cook considers himself the flooring king in the area, offering prices that are almost impossible to match and services that are second to none.
“All of our estimates are free and on site,” Cook said. “We even have homeowners who come in and want to do the job themselves, and we’ll still do an estimate and make sure they get the right materials. We want to make sure they have the right measurements and everything for their project and make sure they don’t buy too much or too little of material.”
And if there is a job he or his crew can’t do themselves, he’ll refer someone who can do it.
“If there’s anything we don’t do, we’ll find someone who is good at what they do and will do the job right,” Cook said.
And when it comes to buying flooring materials, the prices at Jonathan’s Floorings are tough to beat.
He said a lot of times materials can be 30-40 percent of the total ticket cost. Cook’s goal is to keep that cost to 10-20 percent of the ticket. He’s even willing to be flexible with his prices if needed to make the sale.
Just how good are his prices? Consider this example.
“I saw a contractor at one of the bigger stores and he had a pallet loaded up with flooring material. I told him I could get him a better deal and he’s been buying from me ever since,” Cook said. “We offer the same services of a big company, but you don’t pay big company prices. That’s a big selling point for us.”
Cook also prides himself on being accessible to his customers. He has plans to put in a large television screen and connected it to an I-Pad so that if a customer is in the store and he isn’t there, he can still Facetime with the customer.
“I hate a phone that goes unanswered. I always want to be accessible to my customers,” Cook said.
Cook never planned on having a business for as long as he has but because things were going so well, he saw no point in stopping.
His hope is to expand into Destin at some point and remain the best option in the area for construction and flooring.
“I want to build a long-term business. I’m not in this to make a quick buck,” Cook said. “Service is important and offering great prices are important to me.”
