Located between Navarre and Gulf Breeze, Bistro 98 is a busy place around both lunch and breakfast time.
Under new ownership since December of last year, Mike Maurer and his wife, Lynne, have made the restaurant at 5248 Gulf Breeze Parkway a hot spot for dining.
Mike and Lynne opened their first bar and restaurant in 2006 in Arkansas, and it did well.
They then opted in 2013 to relax a bit and spend time traveling before settling in Florida.
As Mike and his wife were getting older, they thought they would just work for someone else. However, they both struggled finding a job because no one wanted to hire someone who had already owned a restaurant. The couple shifted gears and bought their own restaurant again.
“We wanted to find where we fit, and this is a great community,” Lynne said. “We love being here.”
The customers love it too. Mike says that Bistro 98 serves a lot of happy customers that become regulars.
“We have people that come here every single day, and I mean every day. Some guests come for breakfast and then later for lunch also,” Mike said.
Breakfast is served all day, starting at 7 a.m., and there are plenty of choices, everything from Shrimp and Grits to Corned Beef and Hash. Breakfast Nachos feature crisp tortilla chips with Chorizo, onions, avocado, green peppers, tomatoes, scrambled eggs, jalapenos, black beans and queso.
Breakfast sandwiches, omelets, eggs benedict and chicken and waffles are also delicious choices you’ll find on the menu.
From lighter menu options like a chicken salad and chicken wrap to club or Reuben sandwiches, there’s something for everyone.
On the weekends, you can check out the breakfast buffet from 7 a.m. until noon Saturdays and from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sundays. Bistro 98 also serves beer and wine.
Need a place to hold a meeting or banquet? Bistro 98 has you covered with that as well. It has a room available, and there is no charge for the room if you order off the menu.
The beauty of a small business is getting to know all the customers by name Mike said.
“Me and my wife are here most of the time. People enjoy getting to see the owners work and getting to talk to them and getting to know them a little bit and find out what kind of people they are.,” Mike said. “And we’re just normal people. We worked hard all our lives.”
Mike is continuously modifying the menu for his guests and keeping things exciting.
The Bistro Beast is Bistro 98’s newest addition and best-selling item on the menu. It is a delicious omlette, consisting of ham, bacon, roast beef, sausage, mushrooms, green pepper, and hash browns inside, all served with cheddar cheese on top. The Beast is offered as a full omlette or as junior size, but either choice is sure to fill you up.
“You got to mix it up once in a while, introduce some new food items for people, especially the ones that come every day,” Mike said.
The local loving atmosphere that reminds people of home is important to the Maurers.
“We want people to laugh and have a good time here,” Lynne said. “We take pride in what we do and the food we make. We want people to enjoy it and have a good experience here.”
