Behind the scenes: 911 call center during storm

In his 30-plus years with Santa Rosa County, Scott Markel has seen storms and he’s seen wildfires. He was working during Hurricane Ivan, which came ashore 16 years ago as a Category 3 storm.

He was also at the Santa Rosa County Emergency Communications 911 Center last week, when the dispatch center handled more than 1,000 calls in about 12 hours.

It was intense, said Markel, who is the communications chief. But he couldn’t have been prouder of his staff.
