‘To be a veteran is more than a word’

Navarre turned out for the Nov. 11 community ceremony honoring veterans, with hundreds of people filling Navarre Park’s pavilion and crowding around it. Among those in attendance were the Navarre High School Naval JROTC, two Boy Scout troops and a number of service organizations from the area.

The speaker, retired Chief Warrant Officer Vernon Ward, told those gathered that to be a veteran means to embrace something greater than themselves.

Meet Archer, the service dog who works at Navarre Press

On my first day at Navarre Press in 2020, I met Archer, along with all of my other coworkers.

Archer, a Labrador mix, is a working dog who spends most of his days dozing on a bed behind bookkeeper Bethany Stafford’s desk. He dreams and twitches. Sometimes you can hear his tail beat the floor. On what is a “bad dog” day for the working boy, he hopefully approaches a coworker wanting to “make a friend.”

There is a song called “Joy,” performed by pianist George Winston, which I can credit in part with the beginning of my true writing life.

After college, I had originally gotten into social work and, although I was an English major, had not yet discovered the magic of writing. This song, along with a powerful friendship with someone at that time, connected the two.
