Argos ready to kick off fourth season of football

A lot happened under the bright lights of Pen Air Field last Wednesday night.

There were highlight-reel worthy moments of football players dunking balls into trash cans after a turnover, on-the-money throws made by two quarterbacks caught up in a highly contested battle for the starting job, hard hits by the defense and big plays made by the running backs.

It all added up to a productive final scrimmage for the University of West Florida football team. The Argonauts kick off their fourth season of NCAA Division II football Thursday in Tennessee against Carson-Newman. Kickoff is 7 p.m. EST at Burke-Tarr Stadium.

“There were good things on both sides of the ball,” UWF head coach Pete Shinnick said. “We divided the teams up to get guys as many quality reps as possible.”

Over the course of this two-hour scrimmage on a warm night in Pensacola, the Argos lowered the curtain on a productive preseason camp and effectively shifted attention to a bounce-back season that starts with trying to nail down a win over the Eagles, who went 7-4, losing last year’s opener to the Argos at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
