So often the heroes of history feel distant. Their struggles and endeavors, while often impressive, seem not to have any real connection to our daily lives here.
But sometimes those heroes grew up in our own backyard.
Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. (1920-1978) was the nation’s first African-American four-star general, and he was born right here in the Panhandle.
