FLORIDA SHERIFF SEEKS OUT SUSPECTS WITH ‘WHEEL OF FUGITIVE’

For the past 18 months, in brief videos posted to his agency’s Facebook page, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey has selected one fugitive per week with the spin of a large green wheel. Every Tuesday at 8 p.m., viewers can see which fugitive out of the 10 pictured on the wheel will be the winner — or loser — to be pursued that week.

FLORIDA OFFERS MINIMUM WAGE IN NEW PYTHON HUNTING PROGRAM

The South Florida Water Management District said in a statement Thursday that 25 people will be selected for a 60-day pilot program that aims to remove the invasive predators from state-owned lands. Starting April 1, participants will be given special access to python-infested district property in Miami-Dade County. They’ll be paid minimum wage up to eight hours each day, plus $50 per python.

TEEN SENT TO JUVENILE FACILITY FOR KILLING MOTHER’S BOYFRIEND

The teen was sentenced as a juvenile Wednesday after pleading no contest to manslaughter. After leaving the juvenile facility, he will serve conditional release until he’s 21.

ENGINEERS GIVE FLORIDA A “C” GRADE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE

An American Society of Civil Engineers report card released Thursday says investing in infrastructure must be a top priority in Florida given its growing population. The report card looked at all the state’s infrastructure, from transportation to water to energy. Florida’s best score was on bridges, for which it received a “B.” The report card says only 1.7 percent of Florida’s bridges are structurally deficient.

SPACE COAST PROSECUTOR FIRED AFTER DRUG ARREST

State Attorney Phil Archer’s office announced that assistant state attorney John Toppa was fired Thursday morning. The arrest came a day after the 29-year-old Toppa was arrested for purchasing $200 worth of pills of Roxicodone, a pain reliever. A police report says Toppa made the purchase in the parking lot of a Lowe’s store in Rockledge.
