The University of West Florida men’s basketball team is ranked sixth in the first NCAA Division II South regional poll of the year and is poised to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.
The Argonauts are in the midst of a turnaround season, winning 16 of their first 23 games. They won only seven games a season ago.
They have already set a record for wins in Gulf South Conference play, winning 11 of their first 18 conference games. The Argos started conference play with a 0-4 record.
The top eight teams in the region make the NCAA tourney, which will take place the second weekend of March at the site of the top team in the region. Alabama-Huntsville is currently No. 1 in the South.
The West Florida women’s basketball team is ranked second in the regional poll. The Argos are looking for a return to the NCAA tourney after making it last season. West Florida is 19-5 through 24 games and atop the Gulf South Conference with a 14-4 record.
