Girls weightlifting team aims to hit jackpot again

Inside his office on a Thursday afternoon, Navarre girls weightlifting coach Garrett Bagley is talking to a couple of his lifters about what they should be focused on during their workouts for that day.

“Every time I write a workout on the board, it’s like the winning lottery numbers. You just have to play them,” Bagley said. “The girls know that what we do works, and if they follow the protocol and do their part with the workouts, they have a great chance of being successful.”

The Raiders have cashed in on those numbers more than once, winning three state titles, including the last two, and finishing as the runner-up four times since 2010.

Navarre has its sights set on another crown Thursday when it competes in the 2A state meet at Belleview High School.

Leading the way in that quest are Payton Watson and Savannah Diel. Both were state champions a year ago. Both have an opportunity to do it again this year as favorites in their respective weight classes. Watson is at 101. Diel is at 119.
