Raiders rise in this week’s AP football poll

Navarre jumped from eighth to sixth in this week’s Associated Press 6A football poll. The Raiders rose in the poll after overcoming an early deficit to crush American Heritage 70-26 Friday night in their Homecoming game at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

Mainland remains No. 1 in the state, receiving 11 first-place votes. Ocala Vanguard is No. 2 and picked up two first-place votes. Niceville jumps from ninth to eighth and remains unbeaten as well at 8-0.

Navarre trailed 6-0 and 14-7 on Friday before taking the lead for good against a Stallions team that has played in the 3A state finals six times in the last 10 years. The 70 points are the most the Raiders have scored this season and the impressive effort propelled them to their 20th consecutive regular-season win. Navarre is 8-0 overall and will play rival Gulf Breeze Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. showdown at home. The Beach Bowl trophy and District 2-6A title will be on the line when the Raiders and Dolphins square off.

Navarre has won the last nine meetings against Gulf Breeze and is aiming to clinch its second consecutive district championship.
